Pre-operative Tours

Many children who are scheduled for a routine surgery have lots of questions and do not know what to expect on the big day. Anxiety is common in both the patient and parents, especially for a child who is having surgery for the first time or has previously had a traumatizing hospital experience.

Kosair Children's Hospital provides pre-operation tours for children to help familiarize them with the medical equipment and setting, clarify any misconceptions about surgery and, of course, ease the child's anxiety or fears. A tour of the facilities is provided for the child and his or her family, and a CLS will take time to go over the steps that will occur on the day of surgery using a picture book created by the staff. Medical play with realistic medical equipment and dolls will also be encouraged if it is age appropriate.

It is recommended that adequate time be allowed to prepare a child prior to his or her surgery, and this varies depending on a child's age. It is recommended you call at least two weeks in advance so we can best meet you and your child's scheduling needs.

To schedule a group or individual pre-operation tour with a Child Life therapist, call (502) 629-7542.
