Nonoperative Fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery
Pediatricians treat an overwhelming number of musculoskeletal conditions. Within our pediatric emergency departments at Kosair Children’s Hospital and Kosair Children’s Medical Center – Brownsboro, as many as 6,000 visits a year are for orthopaedic- related issues, most of which do not require surgery. An average of one in 20 cases evaluated in the office by a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon requires surgical intervention. There is high demand for a pediatric physician specially trained to manage the conditions that do not require surgery.
Kosair Children’s Orthopaedic Care and Children’s Orthopaedics of Louisville, a practice group within the Norton Healthcare system, is offering a fellowship opportunity to a qualified candidate. This is a one-year fellowship for a final-year pediatric (or related field) resident to evaluate and manage pediatric patients who may not require surgical intervention. This fellowship includes training through Kosair Children’s Orthopaedic Care and Children’s Orthopaedics of Louisville, who have an established educational platform training, University of Louisville orthopaedic surgery residents and family practice sports medicine fellows.
Please make note that a letter of interest must be received by Dec. 31, with completed application materials no later than Jan. 15. Interviews will be granted by Jan. 30.
Fellowship details
This is an employed fellowship with Norton Physician Services. Training takes place entirely in a pediatric environment consisting of the practice, Kosair Children’s Hospital and Kosair Children’s Medical Center. Our fellowship provides didactic interaction, support for clinical research and training in clinical management of pediatric orthopaedic conditions, pediatric fracture reduction, hospital consultative services and inpatient management.
Pediatric orthopaedic surgeons treat a large percentage of children with associated syndromes and underlying diagnoses. This fellowship provides experience with common (e.g., cerebral palsy, myelodysplasia), uncommon (e.g., arthrogryposis, cloacal exstrophy) and many rare (e.g., multiple pterygia, Leigh syndrome) anomalies in addition to the typical complaints of trauma, gait abnormalities and musculoskeletal pain. We work together with other pediatric subspecialists and have specialty interests in neuromuscular conditions, sports, scoliosis, bone fragility and foot deformities. Upon completion our graduates are able to provide ongoing educational training for residents in primary care and orthopaedic fields.
Fellowship responsibilities
Clinical responsibilities will include private and outreach clinics. At Kosair Children’s Hospital, the fellow will have inpatient consultative service experience and learn pediatric fracture reduction and emergent orthopaedic patient management, including covering call at Kosair Children’s with an orthopaedic surgery resident.
The fellow will attend weekly pediatric orthopaedic conferences and didactic lectures, presenting at least one lecture per quarter on varying topics.
Participation in at least one research project is required. Even if the project does not come to completion during the fellow’s tenure, the fellow must submit the abstract to a national meeting and present a paper summarizing the findings. Fellows should plan to continue efforts to take the project to publication.
The candidate is required to attend at least one general pediatric orthopaedic conference (POSNA, IPOS) and one specialty conference (Ponseti, AACPDM, GCMAS, etc.).
